Sleep-breathing disorders are potentially life threatening; therefore, the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases are the domain of the medical profession. The prevailing opinion is that patients should be treated only with a referral by a physician. It is the prerogative of the dental fraternity to educate their medical counterparts on how and when their services can be asked in the treatment for this ailment.
Prosthodontists can play a significant role in the diagnosis of sleep apnoea and the oral appliance therapy to improve the quality of life to the apnoeic patients. Oral appliances are a treatment option in the management of sleep apnea syndromes. While many patients experience a complete or partial resolution of their symptoms, some do not improve or may even become worse. It is therefore imperative that physicians conduct progress evaluations while the respective dental care provider continues to make adjustments to optimize the effectiveness of the chosen appliance.
