Furnace to Fortune: A Steel Worker’s Story

“Furnce to Fortune” depicts these changes dramatically. Partha Mitra, after his
graduation, joined a multi-national company, MESECO. MESECO specialized in
supplying chemicals and other items for steel manufacturers all over Europe. They
started business in India in the sixties. Indian business for MESECO was losing
money till a brilliant Engineer, Omkar Gupta was moved from their London factory to
India in the early seventies. He not only changed the selling methodology but trained
a team of Engineers to support customers. Partha was one of them. He learned the
art and science of steelmaking and became increasingly enamoured with it. The
transformation of crude iron ore to steel fascinated Partha. After a few years, Partha
along with two other Engineers left MESECO to start their own company, TRIO
Refractory. This is the story of TRIO with Partha at the helm managing people,
technology, partnership challenges all at once.
